What is it?

The Friday Morning club is a fun introduction to mountain biking. It’s designed as an introduction for beginners and those who want to rediscover the joy of riding bikes. It’s all about enjoying yourself out on two wheels alongside people who share the same goal.

It’ll be led by Andy Whincup a British Cycling Qualified Mountain Bike Leader with years’ of experience riding and mentoring, so you know you’ll be in a safe pair of hands. You also know you’re riding with someone who really knows where to find the right riding for you.

It’s a weekly ride that will take in some of the most enjoyable riding around Winchester. The ride will be deliberately aimed at those who are beginners or who need to build their confidence.

Above all it’ll be good fun and a chance to meet and ride with new people.

Where is it?

This week we’re riding round Crab Wood on the west of Winchester. The woods are riddled with fun riding and Andy has stitched together the best of it into a lovely ride that captures everything that’s fun about riding here.

You’ll get pretty beech woods dappled in green at this time of year. You’ll get historic sunken lanes. You’ll get twisty woodland singletrack that’s great fun to ride whatever speed you go. You might even get to see deer and buzzards or hear woodpeckers as you ride.

What you won’t get is anything steep either uphill or downhill. Nor will you encounter any busy roads. So you can relax and enjoy yourself.

We’re meeting at Crab Wood Car Park so you either drive or ride there. Give me a call if you want advice on the best way to ride.

Who is for?

It’s very much aimed at those who are just starting out mountain biking. The difficulty is deliberately set low enough for everyone to enjoy. If you think you lack fitness or confidence, then this ride is the ideal place to start.

So come along and give it a try.

When is it?

It’s on Friday 5th August at 10am.

We will be back at the car park by 11:30pm at the latest.

This week we’re setting off from Hunter Park in Twyford to take in two of my favourite local trails.

We’ll pass the Twyford Waterworks en route to Mare Lane, a beautiful ribbon of twisting singletrack. This is a downhill of perfect dirt that flatters everyone and will bring a massive smile to your face whatever speed you go.

We’ll pass the Hazeley War Memorial to take in some spectacular views across Winchester, the South Downs and all the way to the Isle of White.

The ride closes with the drop from the top of the down. This hollow way is a brilliant bit of trail with just the right amount of slope to make the drop a huge amount of fun.

Wednesday night Club good to go
I went out for a quick spin around Wednesday night’s route from Twyford and I can report that the trails are in top condition. Ideal for getting a taste of mountain biking.

The dirt is that lovely consistency that flatters you at every turn. Just dry enough that there’s no mud and just damp enough that there’s grip in spades.

Much more pleasingly though, the verges have been cut back so the final descent beside Hockley Golf Course is wide open and great fun.

There are still a few places if you fancy joining us. I look forward to seeing you.

Get into Mountain Biking: Twyford

Get into Mountain Biking: Twyford

Join us for a delicious taste of what mountain biking is all about. This ride is an absolute hoot that will definitely leave you enthused and wanting more.

What’s it like?

The ride is built around two cracking descents that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. If that’s not enough, the views over Winchester and the South Downs from the top are stunning.

The climbs that link the climbs are within everyone’s grasp with plenty of opportunity to ride at your own pace and chat with the other people on the ride. The views more than make up for any effort you’ve put into getting there.

But it’s the downs that are the heart of this ride.

The first is sweeping woodland singletrack that will have you grinning no matter how fast you choose to go. It’s steep enough to roll the whole way down without pedalling but never intimidating. The dirt is lovely and grippy while the corners are the perfect width to really enjoy.

The second descent is a perennial favourite of mountain bikers in the area because it’s so much fun. It’s a sunken lane that drops from the top of the down threading its way between tall hedges. It strikes just the right balance of steepness. It can be ridden as a flat-out bomb from the top, but it’s just as much fun taken at a gentler pace.

Did I mention the views? They’re lovely too. This is maximum fun for the minimum of effort.

At the end there’s always the opportunity to stop for a drink in Twyford village.

Who’s it for?

This is ideal for people who want to try mountain biking for the first time. It’s also perfect for anyone who has tried it and wants another taste.

The climbs on the route are all achievable by anyone. None of them are too big or steep and there are no real technical obstacles on any of them.

The descents are fun and engaging but neither steep nor too technical. Everything can be ridden comfortably at walking pace. Take them at your own pace: they’re a lot of fun no matter how fast you are going.

The distance is well within reach of everyone but there are opportunities to tailor the route to the fitness of the group on the day.

Where are we meeting?

We’ll meet in Hunter Park in Twyford.

The park entrance is on Park Lane which leaves the main road beside the Bugle Inn.

There are no big climbs so it’s not too strenuous and the scenery is lovely. The descents are all sweeping woodland singletrack that are an absolute hoot and make the most of the height we’ve gained. There is nothing to fear and a lot to enjoy on this ride.

The ride starts from Crab Wood Car Park on Sarum Rd (a few hundred yards west of the cross roads with Sparsholt Rd) and takes us round Crab wood. The ride is mostly bridleway with occasional quiet roads. The exact route will be tailored to the group on the day, so you know it will be right
for you.

Not too much up and a little bit of down, mostly through pretty woods on friendly dirt. You can’t really ask for more.

“I’m not fit enough to ride with you”

“I’m not fit enough to ride with you”

I’ve had a couple of odd conversations this week. I paraphrase, but they went something like this:

“I’m not fit enough to go one of your rides.”

“yes you are, why do you think you’re not?”

“Because you’re really fit, you’ll get bored.”

“The point of the rides is that they’re about you.”

“But I’m still not fit enough.”

From here they became slightly circular.

However, they really made me think.

Both conversations were with women who were thinking about taking part in one of my Get into Mountain Biking rides, but were being put off by perceptions of how fit I am. I was confused to say the least: these rides are designed for people who have never (or almost never) ridden a mountain bike before, so how could you not be fit enough?

So let me state, for the record:

You are fit enough to take part because the Get Into Mountain Biking rides are a fun introduction based on the fitness and ability of those taking part.

Or, to put it another way:

The ride is based on your fitness so you must be fit enough because you only need to keep up with yourself.

The length will be determined by your fitness and the difficulty by your ability. I’m offering these rides because I want people to share my love of riding mountain bikes. I’ve designed them so that they’re fun whatever speed we’re going at. They’re about meeting people and having a great time on two wheels. I’m going to enjoy myself because I get to ride my bike, which I love.

Notice how fitness, speed, difficulty didn’t come into that statement? That’s because they’re irrelevant. I want you to have fun because, if you don’t then I’m not doing my job properly. If you hate it, then you’ll never come back. If you love it, you will. It’s in my interests for you to enjoy yourself as well as meaning there are more people riding bikes, so I promise that I will look after you.

However, I can see where both people were coming from: they’d seen pictures of me with my bike and I look fit. I’m a professional mountain bike leader, being fit and healthy is a matter of professional pride and discipline. The Mountain Bike Leader qualification is pretty exacting and the standard is pretty high, so I need a certain amount of fitness to meet those standards. Also, it is a matter of professional standards to be fit enough to lead every ride I offer without running out of gas, and some of them are quite long. I am in fairly good shape because I need to be. I have also reached an age where this doesn’t happen by accident, it’s the result of fairly hard work.

I can see how, to someone contemplating going for their first ride, that looks pretty intimidating. Believe it or not, I know how you feel. When I turned up for my leader training the chap leading the course looked fit as a butcher’s dog and I thought to myself “Am I in good enough shape for this? Am I going to be able to keep up?”. When I started riding mountain bikes I was much less fit than I am now and struggled to keep up with the (admittedly quite fast) group I joined, but they looked after me.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy riding fast. I enjoy going out with my friends pushing each other to go as fast as we can, coming home knackered. I enjoy going to new places and pitting myself against terrain I’m not sure I can ride. I enjoy getting to the top of a hill before my friends or getting the bottom sharing stories of how fast we went. It’s a lot of fun. In my own time, with my friends.

But it’s not the only reason I ride.

And it’s definitely not the reason I’m doing these rides.

Every day I go out on my bike is a good day.

It’s a very good day if I can share that with other people.

It’s an even better day if they can share it with me.

That’s why I’m doing this. That’s why everyone is fit enough to go on a ride with me. Come on a Get into Mountain Biking Ride to find out.
